Participate in NITMB education, outreach, or convening activities 

Participate in the annual conference, retreat, and all-hands meetings

Participate in at least 25% of Research in Progress meetings. 

Participate in NITMB-related committee work if asked to serve and it is reasonable given their other academic duties.

Contribute descriptions of NITMB-related research for NITMB reports (e.g., to the NSF and Simons Foundation) as well as public-facing communications when requested

Support DEI practices of the NITMB

Must be nominated by an existing NITMB member

Must submit a CV and statement describing their interests in and fit for the NITMB

The Leadership Council reviews nominations and decides on whether to invite nominees for membership twice per year.

Criteria include:

• Tenure-track faculty member of Northwestern University, University of Chicago, or a partnering minority serving institution in the greater Chicago area. 

• Likelihood of  engaging in cross-disciplinary research activities involving  both mathematics and biology or both theory and experiments.

• Likelihood of conducting  fundamental research (not translational/clinical medical research or applied engineering).

• Likelihood of meeting responsibilities outlined above.

• Ensuring full NITMB membership reflects its research themes and a balance between theorists and empirical researchers; mathematicians and biologists.

• Advancing NITMB DEI goals.

An annual report will be required to be submitted by all NITMB members, starting in spring 2025. The report describes their activities in the past year related to NITMB that fulfill the responsibilities outlined above.

The Leadership Council reviews reports for half of the faculty in a given year and reviews the other half of the faculty in a subsequent year. Thus, each member is reviewed once every two years. After review, the Council  decides on whether to renew membership.

Renewal criteria will be based on whether members have submitted a report and they have met the responsibilities outlined above in the past cycle based on the report. 

If the Council determines that a member did not fulfill renewal criteria for the first time, then the member will receive a warning that their membership is in jeopardy. If the member fails to fulfill renewal criteria in subsequent years, then their membership is terminated.

In 2025, annual nomination packages will be due on March 1st and September 1st

Applicants will be notified of the outcome of their application one month after applying.
